About FMS

Flying Monkey Swing was formed in 2006 initially as a dance event promotion entity and has since evolved to include weekly group dance classes, private lessons, workshops, and dance events!



Vicky Yeung

Vicky began her swing dance career at the age of 16 and she hasn't stopped dancing since! Upon her arrival as a student and the Univeristy of Manitoba, she became involved in the campus Swing Dance Club in it's inaugural year, 2000, as an executive member and eventually held the position of president from 2003-2005. Since then, her involvement in the swing dance community has grown to include instruction, performance, and event promotion.

TEACHING

Vicky's 7 year teaching experience includes teaching for the University of Manitoba Swing Dance Club and workshops for many groups, including the Manitoba Retired Teachers Association, Jazz Winnipeg Festival, Canadian Mennonite University, Prairie Lindy Exchange in Saskatoon, and the annual Dancing Under the Canopy at the Forks. She currently teaches classes for The City of Winnipeg Leisure Guide, The University of Manitoba Swing Dance Club, and Allan Nelson's Ballroom and Country Dance Company as well as private lessons for a number of students.

PERFORMING

Vicky currently holds the position of artistic director and choreographer for Winnipeg's only swing dance performance group, Kinetic Swing. With Kinetic Swing, Vicky has performed at annual events such as Dancing Under the Canopy at the Forks and The Winnipeg Fringe Festival as well as various private functions, most recently including the Habitat for Humanity House Party & Auction and the Canadian Professional Photographer's Convention.

EVENTS

Vicky's second passion after dance is event planning and promotion. Following her 5 year involvement as first Social Co-ordinator, then Vice-President, and eventually President of the U of M Swing Dance Club she has continued to promote and organize dance events around the city as Flying Monkey Swing. Her most recent events include:

Benoit Parent

Benoit is originally from Quebec City where he learnt how to swing dance at one of the city's most well known dance studios, Port-O-Swing. As a classically trained musician, swing dance is where Benoit finds his jazzy side.

TEACHING

Upon his arrival in Winnipeg, Benoit began teaching with Vicky, first at the U of M Swing Dance Club and then for Flying Monkey Swing at Patricia's Dance Studio and Allan Nelson's Dance Company. In 2008, Benoit hopes to offer a Swing class taught in French through the City of Winnipeg Leisure Guide.

PERFORMING

Benoit is currently also a member of Kinetic Swing, Winnipeg's all swing dance performance troupe. He is involvment in the group extends beyond just group number to solo performance and choreography.
