CONCEPT
Transparency:
- One of the pleasant qualities of the site as it stands is the ability to see through the block. I want to maintain this feeling.
Voyeurism:
- An important part of art is the ‘other’ - the person who will experience, view, or use what you create. Tacheles is about people coming and experiencing art. The site should be a work of art.
Public space:
- Public space in the area is really semi-public. People hang out in restaurants and bars. Courtyards are hidden or uninviting. I want people to walk through the space and perhaps stay for a while.
Temporality:
One thing that makes Berlin unique is the feeling of temporality you experience from walking through the city. It is a city of constant change. Restaurants and bars constantly change location. Buildings are renovated, refurbished, and re-clad. “Berlin is clumsily unfinished.[1]” To fight this is unnecessary. Instead it should be embraced. My goal is to create something that is designed and built but has a feeling of temporality, a essence of being unfinished.[1] Spaces of Uncertainty, p. 58.
